Cabotage
Cabotage: a complex issue but nonetheless a crucial necessity for all non-European operators flying into Europe. In aviation terms cabotage is the right to operate within the domestic borders of another country. Specifically in business aviation this affects all non-European operators wishing to operate for hire and reward within Europe.
In order for such operators to fly legally within the borders of Europe their aircraft must be 'imported'. This is not importing in terms of aircraft re-registration in another country but, simplistically, is a term used to cover a paperwork procedure that, when complete, allows aircraft to operate for hire and reward within Europe. This can either be on a temporary basis (five years), known as free circulation, or on a permanent basis, which is known as full importation.
As an operator using Harrods Aviation you should simply consider cabotage as another service, all the while remembering to request it at least 48 hours prior to your arrival in the UK. We can then make contact with you to gather the necessary paperwork and have your application processed in time for your onward departure to mainland Europe.
The cost of obtaining clearance for your aircraft is either £150 or £250 (both prices are subject to VAT) dependent on how quickly you need the authority to travel. This is a small price to pay to avoid the risk of your aircraft being impounded with large fines for release.
